Science is...

It seems that these days it has become fashionable to talk about "Science" as if it is a philosophy or a religion. It is neither; it IS a methodology. "Science" IS the "scientific method," and that is only a way of exploring the world around us.

Science does not explain the universe. It does allow us to discover and explore the facts, and the relationships between those facts, that explain the nature of the world. Science does make one basic assumption; it assumes that there is a real, objective universe that exists outside of our mind which we perceive through the use of our senses.

Given that a real world exists (and that there are multiple intelligences with different viewpoints within it), it must be possible to ascertain the nature of that world through the comparing of perceptions of that world. Science is a methodology and language which allows multiple intelligences (Let's call them "people.") to test the nature of the world in repeatable ways and then compare the results of those tests.

As a species, through the method of science, we have learned a great deal about the laws of the real world. We use that knowledge to create things. Those things are our tools and the general term for a group of tools is a "technology." "Technology" is not "science," it is the result of the application of knowledge. That knowledge is uncovered through the use of scientific inquiry.

Maybe the following chart will be helpful. It is a rough approximate hierarchy of jobs in our modern technologically-enhanced culture.
